Valerie Prucnal has been appointed as Merion Mercy's Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2020.

Valerie is a longtime and well-respected member of the faculty and administration at Merion Mercy and has adeptly served as Interim Assistant Head of Academics for the past year.

"She knows our school and girls well," shared Head of School Laura Farrell.  "She has a deep love for MMA and will continue to create a vibrant, inclusive, and student-centered learning experience where all girls thrive."

The appointment follows the successful completion of a national search that began in December.  Throughout the process, Valerie distinguished herself from an extensive pool of 74 candidates.  During the interviews, Valerie was lauded by faculty as a team builder who "is abundantly kind and generous with her time" and "an empathetic listener and an understanding colleague."  Others pointed out that Valerie  "values the opinions of others and places importance on open dialogue."  Administrators praised her "nuanced understanding of student-centered learning" and commitment to "provide learning experiences that focus on what students value most."

Prior to becoming Interim Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs, Valerie held various leadership positions at MMA, including Science Department Chairperson, Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools Steering Committee member, and Student Council Moderator. Valerie's 20-year career in education, which includes almost a decade on the faculty of St. Agnes Academy for Girls in Memphis, has given her a deep understanding of how schools work.  She has played a key role in mentoring new teachers; implementing school policy and procedures; working collaboratively with parents, counselors and administrators; developing individualized programs for at-risk and special needs students; serving as a club moderator; planning field trips; tutoring students; and conducting educational research.

Valerie has established a strong record as an innovative and collaborative educator who is dedicated to the school community.  Reflecting on her decision to accept the position, Valerie said, "My own Mercy (undergraduate) education at Saint Xavier University was a transformative one, and I have committed my professional life almost exclusively to the education of young women.  The opportunity to serve MMA in this capacity is immense, and I look forward to the outstanding work we will do as a community."

Valerie graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree from Saint Xavier University. She earned a master's degree in teaching and learning from DePaul University and a second master's degree in education administration from Saint Xavier. Her passion for continued lifelong learning is enhanced by her professional membership in the following organizations: National Coalition of Girls' Schools; National Association of Independent Schools; Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; National Science Teachers Association; and American Modeling Teachers Association.

"Valerie is an outstanding role model for faculty and students alike.  Her confidence, emotional intelligence, and compassion bring out the best in those around her," said Laura Farrell.  "I've had the benefit of working with Valerie and seeing her in action each day.  She maintains high standards, makes compassionate decisions, and has earned the respect of our community.  I can think of no better person to have by my side to lead Merion Mercy."
