In celebration of Black History Month and in partnership with MMA's Black Student Union's annual showcase that will, in part, focus on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), we will be highlighting some of our MMA alumnae who have gone on to pursue higher education at HBCUs, sharing their stories and successes in a weekly series.

We launch with Briana Lawimore '20 who is currently attending Howard University, in Washington DC. Says Briana, "For my college experience, I wanted to be immersed in an environment that had my best interest in mind as a young black woman pursing STEM. I love the culture and the people that make up Howard University. I felt that Howard was the best place for me to connect more with my identity and grow in my passions. One of my most memorable experiences in college so far is being a part of the Diaspora Connect Program, a virtual language exchange program between students at Howard and students at Universidad del Valle and Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó in Colombia. In this program, I get to practice my Spanish with my Colombian partner and learn more about the Afro-Colombian culture. I am looking forward to traveling to Colombia this spring to meet the Colombian students in the program. In the future, I hope to become a dermatologist or a cosmetic chemist."
