This week's spotlight on an alumna who attended an HBCU is Jasmine Joseph '10. "I attended Howard University in Washington DC. While there, I participated in many different extracurricular activities and service projects. One in particular was the spring break where I stayed in DC to help volunteer at local public schools. I also had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Peru which was a great life experience to help me learn of a new perspective. Another part about going to an HBCU is the emphasis on leadership. While at Howard, I served as president of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). I also became a member of the illustrious Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated. My community service and internship experiences led me to pursue a career in the field of education. After graduating from Howard, I took a year to do community service with Americorps as a corps member of City Year Washington DC. Now I am a middle school English teacher and I have my master's degree in education with a specialty in reading. One key takeaway from attending a HBCU is learning the value of giving back to the community. That is why I am an educator today and remain active in my sorority. I am always looking to empower those around me and aspire to uplift future generations."
