All students taking Latin at Merion took the National Latin Examination. Taken by over 155,000 students across the United States and within several foreign countries, these standardized tests are administered in one full academic period. The National Latin Examination Committee, whose membership consists of university professors and secondary school teachers of Latin, composes the tests annually with the intention of measuring a student’s command of Latin grammar, vocabulary, and syntax. Each test consists of forty multiple choice questions inclusive of a Latin passage on which questions explore the student’s ability to comprehend and translate.

Of the sixty-seven (67) MMA students who took the exams, sixty-four (64) or 95% received awards. Of those 64 awards, 24 were summa and 22 maxima, meaning that 72% of the total awards to MMA were in the two highest categories. Of the twenty-three (23) students who took the Latin I, twenty-one (21) or 91% received awards; twenty (20) completed the Latin II and nineteen (19) or 95% received awards; thirteen (13) did the Latin III with thirteen (13) or 100% receiving awards; eleven (11) took the Latin IV Poetry and ten (10) or 91% received awards.
