Varsity Four Takes First at National Championship; Lightweight Eight Nabs a Second Place Finish

The Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, hosted this year's Scholastic Rowing Association of American's National Championship.

Merion Mercy had an impressive showing; MMA won the girls' varsity four and placed second in the girls' lightweight eight.

"This is the national championship and schools come from all over the country to compete here and it's what you work for all season," said Merion Mercy athlete Morgan Lamb, who rowed in the winning four.

"There is something different about this regatta, and something special about this course. It's just lights out, every stroke, every race. For us, being a school, it's more difficult because clubs get to pick from different schools. This is a better competition level for us as a high school."

Head coach Mike Brown has been with Merion Mercy for several years and has helped develop the program into a consistently competitive squad with limited resources. This year, Brown's girls have excelled and won at the prestigious Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia. And they now have a national championship gold, a silver in the girl's lightweight eight, and they are heading to Great Britain to race at the Henley Women's Regatta and to Sarasota, Florida, for the USRowing Youth Nationals

This comes on the heels of another stellar performance last weekend. Rowing took home a pair of gold medals in the 91st Stotesbury Cup Regatta.  MMA has only won two other golds at Stotes, and both on the same day in 2012–a Freshman 8+ gold and a Varsity 4+ gold. In 2017, we won gold in the V4+ category again, and took home gold in the Lightweight 8+ category for the first time.

MVP Marks Its 25th Year

The Mercy Volunteer Program (MVP) was established to provide educational and service opportunities for MMA students the summer before their senior year.  In the 25 years of its existence, MVP participants have traveled to domestic and international sites, working in collaboration with community partners and in solidarity with people of diverse culture, especially those who are materially poor.

MVP has served in far-off places, such as Kentucky, West Virginia, Arizona, Peru, and Mexico, and closer sites in Camden, Philadelphia, and Trenton. “The works we do in the various programs during the summer have broad range. MVP volunteers build, paint homes, garden, serve dinners at homeless shelters, lead vacation Bible school, and take on a variety of assignments given to us by the point person at each site,” said MVP co-founder and former MMA faculty member, Ms. Kimberly Baxter.

The MMA student and faculty and/or alum volunteers live in community for an extended period of time and are called to spirit-filled reflection that encourages them to grow in their role as women and men of Mercy.

Through the support of the administration, faculty, staff, students, alumnae, and families, MMA’s deep desire that Catherine McAuley’s vision for Mercy continues is what drives the work to integrate her vision throughout the school’s programs. As MVP completed its 25th summer service program, it is clear how the core values are deep rooted into this program so that the legacy of Catherine McAuley continues. By reaching out and to others and experiencing a true world view, MVP participants are able to literally bring the values of Mercy to extended communities while infusing the halls of MMA with the same values upon which the Sisters of Mercy were founded.

This summer, MMA students and faculty and/or alum volunteers served in Camden, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, Beattyville, KY, and Aldersen, West Virginia. Click here to view photos from MVP 2017.

Merion Mercy Academy is pleased to announce that Dr. Cara Latham has accepted the position of Music Director, effective August 21, 2017. The responsibilities of MMA's Music Director include teaching music majors, participating in extracurricular work with singing and instrumental groups, and supervising other music teachers.

Dr. Latham holds a Bachelor's degree from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Master's degrees in Music (Yale University) and Music Teaching (Oberlin College Conservatory of Music), and a Doctorate in Musical Arts (Temple University.) She has taught voice, musical theater, and classes in music theory on the faculties of Yale School of Drama, University of Minnesota, West Chester University, and Agnes Irwin School. Dr. Latham is a trained singer, conductor, pianist, arranger, and teacher, and looks forward to leading an excellent and dynamic music program.

Dr. Latham is drawn to MMA's mission and welcomes the opportunity to "help others to grow in their faith, and to facilitate their worship and praise of God through music."

Since the founding of the school in 1884, the arts have played a significant role in the life of Merion Mercy.  As far back as the late 19th century, Merion Mercy was filled with musical activity. MMA has boasted a rich commitment to music for decades with a range of music-related activities, such as voice recitals, chamber music concerts, choral performances, and collaboration with poetry, dance, and theater classes and performances. Throughout the past 133 years, students, faculty, and alumnae have been adding to the score, building the school's reputation as one of the area's finest places to both study and perform.

This devotion to layered, artistic culture continues today. The sounds of music are alive and resounding –in the voices ringing at each Mass sung by the Liturgical Ensemble, in the Christmas spirit felt by everyone at Carol Night, in the harmonious sounds coming from the music room during an Ensemble practice. More than a third of students participate in at least one music offering, such as Merion Mercy Music Theater (MMMT), Glee Club, Ensemble, Handbells, A Cappella Group, and Chorale.

Ongoing support from alumnae and parents bear witness to the impact that music offerings have had on generations of young women. "A successful music program continues to be one of MMA's strategic priorities," says Head of School Sister Barbara Buckley. "I am pleased to welcome Dr. Latham and look forward to working with her to both bolster and further enrich our dynamic program."
