MMA's gymnasium officially opened yesterday with a dedication preceding a volleyball game against the Mount. After Head of School Sister Barbara Buckley gave remarks and formally opened the new gymnasium,  all of MMA's senior volleyball players simultaneously did a ceremonial serve across the net. The serves flew with cheers from the crowd, MMA's Dance Team, and the school's beloved mascot, the Golden Bear, while MMA volleyball coach Jolen Aldaya and junior varsity coach and MMA alumna Dani Carrozza set off blue and gold streamers. The  ceremony ended with the announcing of both teams' players; then the singing of the National Anthem.

After fending off visiting Mount in the first set and emerge with a 25-22 win, the Volleybears clawed their way back from a 9-6 deficit in the second set to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead. With victory closing in, the Mount did their best to play spoiler taking the next two sets 25-20 and 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set.

Merion Mercy Music Theater (MMMT) is a drama and music club opened to all of our students.  We are happy to announce the 2017 fall drama:

AS IT IS IN HEAVEN by Arlene Hutton

The 1830’s Shaker society of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, is set in ordered ways. The arrival of Fanny upsets the harmony. Fanny sees angels in the meadow, and soon all the young women are receiving spiritual “gifts” of songs, drawings, ideas and giggles, completely upsetting the community.  Eldress Hannah is jealous that she, the most devout of Shakers, has not been privileged to see the visions. But only the ones who question need visual proof. Whether they were heavenly or earthly, Fanny insists that the angels were there.

Performance Dates:  Friday Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2:00 p.m.

Merion Mercy Basketball Hosts First Game in New Gym

On December 16, Merion was finally able to play their first home game in a little over a year in a building that Sister Barbara Buckley, the Head of School, described as a labor of love that was 10 years in the making.

Following a short ceremony that included Sister Barbara taking the first ceremonial shot (that did go in after a friendly roll off the front rim), the teams were ready for action.

Following the opening tip, nerves were apparent as neither team was able to crack the scoring column. With 5:05 remaining in the first quarter, Nora Pergolini '18 recorded the first basket in the new gym by hitting a running bank shot to give her team the 2-0 lead.

"It's very cool," said Nora Pergolini. "One our assistants congratulated me when I sat down and I did not realize what he was talking about. He then told me I scored the first basket."

In front of a spirited crowd, Merion gave Athletic Association of Catholic Academies foe Gwynedd Mercy Academy all they could handle for 2 ½ quarters before faltering in the end as the Monarchs pulled away for the 42-29 victory.

"It has been really special," said senior co-captain Nora Pergolini, who finished four points (including the first basket in the new gym) and two rebounds. "Although we did not win today, I am glad we have a sense of home."
